In the world of fast-food marketing, the norm is to showcase mouth-watering, perfect-looking food.
In 2020, Burger King decided to do something wildly different.
Known as the "Moldy Whopper" campaign, Burger King featured a time-lapse of a Whopper turning moldy over 34 days.
This campaign was designed to demonstrate Burger King's commitment to removing artificial preservatives from its products.
As you can imagine, the campaign received a polarized response.
Many people celebrated it for its boldness and honesty. Marketing expert Seth Godin commented, "It's a signal that they're willing to embrace what real food acts like and stand behind the quality of their food."
Others criticized it for putting them off ever eating burgers again.
Fernando Machado, Burger King's Global Chief Marketing Officer at the time, said, "At Burger King, we believe that real food tastes better. That's why we are working hard to remove preservatives, colors, and flavors from artificial sources from the food we serve in all countries around the world."
While it may not have appealed to everyone's taste, according to reports, due to the media frenzy it created, the campaign received over 8.4 Billion impressions and increased sales by over 14%.
It even won numerous awards, including multiple Grand Prix at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity.
In effect, this campaign covered something important that Russell talks about in Expert Secrets.
To many people, this ad confirmed suspicions that lots of preservatives are used in fast food, it threw rocks at those who do, and allayed the fears of Burger King fans.
This undoubtedly helped fuel media attention and created results far better than many of Burger King's previous ads.
