I'd been working on the offer and structure for my 'Secrets of Success' community for years. And so I was really excited when I finally got the time to sit down and put together the sales letter during a flight. I sat down on the plane, went into focus mode… and over the next four hours I accomplished pretty much nothing. I couldn't figure out what was wrong with me. I've written hundreds of sales letters. I was super excited to write this one in particular. But when it came down to it… I didn't know what to say. What was wrong with me? Then a few days later I was talking to Josh Forti and he told me how he had revisited my book, Expert Secrets, and figured out who his people were and what movement he was trying to create. And then it clicked! I hadn't clearly defined WHO I was writing for… It wasn't that I didn't know the right stuff to put on the sales page… it was that I didn't know how to say it because I didn't know who I was talking to. After all… a letter for everyone is a letter for no one. Obviously I knew what my offer was… and I knew it was amazing. But I hadn't sat down and said to myself, "Okay. But who is this for?" So I took a step back and thought about my dream customer. And I figured out they are the "round pegs in square holes." The crazy ones. The misfits. The people who push change forward because they're crazy enough to believe change is possible. From there the sales letter (and all the other marketing assets) flowed like butter. Because I knew who I was talking to. If you want to become "best friends" with influencers in your niche, you've got to rise above that noise. But what do you say? When do you reach out? How do you ask them to…well, promote your stuff? Dale Carnegie once said, "Talk to someone about themselves and they'll listen for hours." Literally EVERYONE loves to talk about themselves and be told how great they are. So that's your very first message. And be specific. Tell them how something they did personally had an impact on you and compliment them on how great they are. 🚦Green Light #3 — You've done your homework on them. If you do the first two green lights, then there'll come a time when you actually get to talk to them more deeply… maybe it's online or maybe it's face-to-face. But if that time comes and you don't know anything about them or what they're interested in, then you could lose your shot.
