PATAGONIA'S POWERFUL BLACK FRIDAY BRANDING EXERCISE With Black Friday just gone and the New Year sales about to kick in, most brands are lined up to discount their products to sell as much as possible.
However, we found an article this week detailing how clothing brand Patagonia does something completely different.
Given the hype around Black Friday, instead of doing everything in their power to boost sales, Patagonia use the event to bring attention to issues they care about.
For example, in 2011, they ran an ad with the headline 'Don't Buy This Jacket', making the case that people need to consume less, businesses need to make fewer things but of higher quality, and customers need to think twice before they buy.
In 2016, they donated all sales that came in on Black Friday ($10 million) to environmental causes.
In 2019, they matched customers' donations resulting in $20 million to environmental nonprofits ($10 million from customers and $10 million from the company).
This year, Patagonia launched a campaign called "Alaska Needs You." The goal of this campaign was to unite their community to help save Alaska's largest connected park landscape from the toxic impacts of open-pit mining.
Patagonia's brand beliefs are all about protecting the planet. Their commitment to these values is central to their brand identity.
Contrary to what you might expect, these campaigns continue to drive Patagonia's sales.
By openly sharing these values, they build an army of raving fans who have the same values.
You can do the same.
In a world where people are increasingly value-driven, standing for something meaningful can create a deep, loyal connection with your audience.
Think about the things you stand for. What are your values?

Here's what Charles F. Hannel says about it: "Visualize a Battleship."
Told you it was weird!
But I've been thinking about this exercise for days until it finally hit me.
Honestly, it's THE CURE for powerlessness.
Here it is…
He says you need to go backwards in time and visualize how the battleship actually came into being: - Visualize the thousands of men hammering the steel plates into place
- Visualize the ore as it comes from the mine
- Visualize the architect and engineers who planned the vessel
Eventually you get to this point:
"You will see that you are now so far back that the vessel is something intangible, it no longer exists, it is now only a thought existing in the brain of the architect."
Now…
Here's how this will help you.
The point of the exercise is to realize that a single idea was responsible for all the most amazing creations in the world.
Visualize this for example... - Visualize a successful person who has achieved something you'd like to achieve
- Visualize whatever it is they've created – a company, a fortune, a product
- Visualize how that thing came into being until you're at the point where it's just an idea in their brain
Did you get the lesson yet?
The lesson is that a single idea you have today could set in motion exactly the same success in your life.
Everything starts with a thought.
And that means…
All you need to do is have an awesome thought and keep on working on it until you hit whatever goal you're working towards!
In the words of Charles F. Hannel:
